Before I make the same mistake...
OK, so I'm known for my poor decisions when picking classes... Here's some examples:
Pre-Nerf Bounty Hunter (SWG) ShadowKnight (EQII) Controller (CoH) Warlock (WoW) As you can see I've continually picked the worst of the worst. My first toon in GW is a Necro/Monk. I'm still pre-searing, and the only time I find myself in trouble is fighting 6 or more mobs. I feel relatively powerful, in many case 2 shotting enemies. The ability to heal myself hwile causing damage is awesome... I understand the role of having subpar nukes in exchange for having the healing factor of some necro spells. But I haven't seen the downside of my choices yet. I use reversal of fortune, bane and 1 healing spell from my monk... Now here's the million dollar question... After reading it seems many people are saying this a weak class combo, and "end-game" is very weak PvP... So... Did I do it again? Did I pick a lousy class? Am I gimping myself for the future and I don't know it already? Pre-searing and low-level I feel powerful, but I'm wondering if that's going to change... |

Nope. There's no such thing as a lousy class in Guild Wars. Some people may say Necros are not good for PvP, but I've done team arenas and HoH many times and I've seen Necros tear things up and really wreck havok.

Necros are typically considered "weak" in PvP. Your secondary doesn't really matter, as you can change that after Ascension.
Necros are good PvE though. A N/W is pretty handy PvP as well. I wouldn't sweat it. It's not like you're going to make a massive time investment in your character. I created a character I could level up with and farm well with as my first. In the end, I'd just recommend finding a character who fits a role that you enjoy playing. Everyone has their place. |

Mob fights in PvE (NOT =) Fights in PvP
Not even close. But trust me... the game and mobs get MUCH more powerful, faster than you expect. Just you wait. There is a good balance in this game - far more than any other in history at release, as witnessed by the lack of "nerf XXX". Not easy to do with all the skills and profession choices, but they did it. {The amount of "too many W/Mo" not withstanding, as many necros can easily beat these guys anyway}. You say you feel powerful. Good. You should. I have spoken to many Warrior/Monks who feel the same way. Same with Warrior/Elementalist earth tanks that bearly need any healing. I can say the same about my Monk/Mesmer who may not be able to deal any damage, but can EASILY keep a 6 person team alive on her own to progress forward . None to worry. Jana |

For the record, my statement was based on the commonly held conception that necro primaries are "weak" in PvP. Necros have no such stigma as a secondary class.

the spec you will use in PvE will not be the same you use in PvP..
taps in pve will make you unstopable.. debuffs in pvp will make your team deadly. |

A necro is what you make him
You are perhaps refering to the old critique on the usefulness of Soul Reaping in PvP (as perceived versus the high usefulness it has in PvE) and therefore going primary necro..?
If that's the case, it doesn't hurt to remember that a necromancer's dependence on corpses for both his primary ability and a good sized chunk of his skills is just as situational as most of a mesmer's skills. Just like playing a mesmer well, taking full advantage of a necro's special abilities takes a greater degree of situational awareness and familiarity with the game. So don't worry, the beauty of GuildWars is that there really is no such thing as a bad profession pick, mix or combo...your tactics and skill selection will and should change constantly anyway, which will only get more apparent the further you progress. Play what you like, not what your friend tells you 'is cool'...and then surprise his wa/mo in the tombs with a new skill combo that leaves him gawking...and quite dead Bleys Leader of the Dirty Dozen [DD] |
